Military gears up for ‘Chedeng’ – Clark Pampanga Philippines
May 26, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) remains on full alert as it issued a command preparedness directive to be incorporated in the Brigada Eskwela program, as Typhoon Chedeng is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility Thursday.
Chief of Staff General Eduardo Oban Jr. issued the directive commanding its units, particularly those in the field, to coordinate with local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council upon the arrival of the typhoon.
The AFP National Capital Regional Command (NCRCOM) is also gearing up as it anticipates the arrival of Chedeng (international codename: Songda).
Such preparation is in relation to the risk reduction trainings and interoperability with other concerned agencies to ensure people’s safety, officials said.
“The AFP deployed in strategic areas predicted to be affected by the typhoon will maintain its significant capability deployment ready to provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief,” Oban said.
“Your soldiers’ role is to be actively postured anywhere in the country. Military assets and capabilities positioned in these areas are ready to support emergency relief efforts. Assets include medical, evacuation, rescue and relief capabilities coming from various units,” Oban added.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations Gen. Jose Z. Mabanta Jr. said that some 900 AFP personnel have been deployed to help in the Brigada Eskwela program of the Department of Education (DepEd) in Luzon.
The deployment of soldiers throughout the country is expected to contribute to the ongoing efforts of the DepEd to rally local communities in rehabilitating their own local schools.
