Group backs rehab of old public market
May 24, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Multi-Sectoral Governance Council (MSGC) is looking into backing the call of vendors’ groups in the city to be able to compete with the advent of malls and big supermarkets.
MSGC committee on Trade and Industry and Development Enterprise (Tide) chairman Rene Romero said: “We just met with the Golden Group which is the biggest group of vendors in the city. What we at Tide and them agreed upon was to have the old public market rehabilitated.”
He said the group will write to Tide with its request, which the committee will then toss to Mayor Oscar Rodriguez.
“We expect that after the letter is given to us by Golden Group, the MSGC will then toss it to the mayor. Then the mayor will decide on our request. The letter will state the rehabilitation of the old public market to have at least four floors,” said Romero.
Romero said the renovated public market will have the first floor as a wet section; the second floor as dry section; and the rest of the floors for parking, which is a big problem in the city right now.
โWe will benchmark those in other areas like Dagupan City and Laoag. The other request from MSGC will be to ask the city council to create a technical working group and its composition. If sectors are not properly represented, like there are about 10 vendorsโ groups in the city, we might have a problem. They all must be represented in the TWG,” he added.
Romero said in terms of funding, like what Councilor Alex Patio revealed earlier may hamper the rehabilitation, he said: “Maraming paraan. Either the Rodriguez administration seeks for a soft loan or have the operations of the old public market privatized. The only thing with privatization is local vendors might find it not within their terms because rent of stalls will shoot up because of professionalization,” added Romero.
He said if the local government unit takes on option one [soft loan], then it might just work.
“If either of the plans are accepted by local vendors, the old public market is still deemed to become world class and competitive. I myself, as Fernandino, would want it that way. Nothing more and nothing less,” Romero said.
Over at the City Council, Councilor Noel Tulabut is fast tracking a supplemental resolution on the TWG. Tulabut is the chair of the councilโs market enterprise.
