Officials support ‘Brigada Eskwela’ program

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Pampanga officials showed their support to uplift the status of public education in the city by assisting the Department of Education (DepEd) in its Brigada Eskwela 2011 program.
In Angeles City, Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan, assisted by Vice Mayor Vicky Vega Cabigting, turned over 60 big cans of paint, 60 broomsticks and other tools to various schools all over the city for the DepEd program, which kicked off Monday at the Rafael L. Lazatin Memorial High School (RLLMHS).
Pamintuan said education is a continuing effort of the City Government, as promised under his administration’s Contract with the Angeleños.
“The remaining P400 million budget that was supposedly apportioned for building a city sports complex would now be used for two upcoming projects – half of this said budget would be used to construct a two-hectare Angeles City Community College near the Agyu Tamu Sports Complex while the other half would be spent to upgrade the Rafael L. Lazatin Memorial Medical Center (formerly Ospital Ning Angeles),” the mayor said.
In support to the city’s program on education, Vice Mayor Cabigting vowed to seek the aid of private and civic organizations in the “Adopt-a-School” project, which aims to repair and renovate several public schools across the city.
Dr. Victoria Aguas, Angeles School Division superintendent, thanked the barangay and city officials for their continuous support to the Brigada Eskwela.
She said the program will surely help beautify and reconstruct the schools, not only in the city, but the whole country as well.
The program was highlighted by the ceremonial turnover of the paint and broomsticks to the schools and the painting of a wall by city officials and guests. City councilors Edu Pamintuan and Joseph Alfie Bonifacio were also present during the event.
Meanwhile, City of San Fernando’s committee on education chairman Councilor Jimmy Lazatin visited several schools Monday as part of the nationwide launching of the Brigada Eskwela program.
“As the chairman of the committee on education, we don’t only come up with legislative measures in support of education but put these into tangible actions like linking up with private companies as part of their corporate social responsibility to take part in our share of responsibility to improve quality of education in any way we can like helping create more conducive environment for learning,” Lazatin said.
He was referring to the help extended by Boysen, which donated some 50 cans of latex paints, which Lazatin started distributing Monday and until the end of the week.
Seven schools each received a can namely: Sindalan Elementary School (ES), Calulut ES, Panipuan ES, Malino ES, Baliti ES, Telabastagan ES and San Pablo ES.
The San Juan High School in Mexico town also commenced Monday their Brigada Eskwela activities.
The launching was graced by Mexico town Mayor Teddy C. Tumang, who lauded the said school for being consistent in keeping up with the said DepEd’s program. He likewise congratulated school personnel for the recognition it earned as the best Brigada Eskwela in the Division and Regional Level of the Education department.
This year’s highlight features a mini-street dancing with students showcasing the community with brooms and dustpans backed-up by a drum and lyre group in an atmosphere of volunteerism.
For her part, San Juan High school Principal Josefina Castro thanked the community for actively involving themselves in the preparation of the coming school year.
“Salamat po sa lahat ng mga sumusuporta sa aming paaralan lalo na po sa panahon ng paghahanda para sa darating na pasukan,” she said.
Castro added that more innovations for the school shall be introduced this coming school year that will help students in their schooling and for the further improvement of the school premises.
Brigada Eskwela is an annual schools’ cleanup and repair activity spearheaded by DepEd, with the cooperation of non-government organizations, parents, students, teachers, the business community and civic organizations.
Since its inception in 2003, Brigada Eskwela became a movement that ensured the readiness of public schools for school opening.
Instead of cash donations, participants to the clean-up drive donate construction and cleaning materials, or serve as volunteers to prepare the schools two weeks before the opening of classes.
Last year, some 44,619 public elementary and secondary schools nationwide participated in the event with about P12.5 billion worth of goods and services donated by the private sector through the Adopt-A-School program. (Reynaldo G. Navales/Ian Ocampo Flora/DPL)
