Clark Pampanga Philippines Golf News Impending Revolt in Manila Southwoods Golf Club
Some playing members of the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club in Carmona, Cavite are facing a different hazard on their home ground. The obstacle has led them to band themselves into a reformist group in the hope of bringing about a change in the management of the golf and country club and restoring transparency to the awarding of contracts and services in their enclave.
They were initially relieved to learn that with tycoon Andrew Tanās group taking over Fil-Estate Land Inc. from businessman Robert John SobrepeƱa, changes in the management of the club would soon be imminent. But Andrew Tanās acquisition of a 60-percent stake in Fil-Estate Land, renamed Global-Estate Resorts Inc., it seems, will not immediately lead to swift changes. Management reforms may take some time to happen, or they may not at all materialize if the current board will have its way.
The grapevine said Andrew Tan may now own Global-Estate, but this does not automatically make him a board member of the country club. Club rules stipulate that one can become a board member of the club only if he has been part of one of the many committees of the organization for one year. Andrew Tan is not.
āIt will be in the interest of Andrew Tan to control the golf course,ā one Southwoods golfer told this writer.
Some 3,000 members are set to elect a new board in June this year but with SobrepeƱa and his proxies controlling the board, disenchanted members are losing hope of any improvement in their club.
āThe reform group wants to ease out SobrepeƱa and his group from the board and management of the club. They feel the club has been mismanaged the way they are being charged with increased dues,ā another member said.
The disgruntled members also fear that the current board could hold on to their current position by simply declining to submit their proxies during election time, resulting in no quorum and holdover capacity.
The grapevine said members had resented being charged with a āspecial assessmentā on top of their monthly dues for some club expenses that management initiated āfrom repairs of the fairways to everything.ā
The members, in addition, claimed that SobrepeƱa and his group had cornered contracts ranging from security and catering to golf carts, and demanded transparency.
Andrew Tanās possessions
Andrew Tan now indirectly owns two subsidiaries of Global-Estate after purchasing a 60-percent interest in the erstwhile SobrepeƱa company. These are Fil-Estate Properties, Inc. and Fil-Estate Golf and Development Inc., which are both engaged in the development of residential subdivisions, townhouses, golf course communities, condominiums, office buildings, industrial estates and resort communities.
The group also in March 2002 formed Fil-Estate Urban Development Corp. to pursue the development of city-based residential and commercial projects.
Andrew Tanās acquisition is a perfect fit to his expanding property and leisure and resorts businesses. The tycoon earlier said that Global-Estate, the former Fil-Estate Land, would become the companyās vehicle for tourism projects outside of Metro Manila. Global-Estate owns large tracts of property in prime locations such as in Tagaytay City, Batangas, Boracay and Iloilo.
The sprawling 140-hectares that cover Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club, meanwhile, will lure Global-Estate clienteles to the amenities of the private golf course. Fil-Estate Properties and Fil-Estate Golf can also offer the residential subdivisions surrounding the golf course to the varied clients of the mother companyāAlliance Global Group Inc.
