A festival of heritage churches at SM City Pampanga

May 20, 2011

IN CELEBRATION of the Filipino Heritage Month this May, SM City Pampanga is now hosting a fascinating exhibit of heritage churches in the country, magnificently immortalized in beautiful photographs at the mall’s Annex 3.
The exhibit — which runs until May 22 — is part of SM’s contribution to the Heritage Month Celebration. The event is in partnership with the Filipino Heritage Festival Inc., Metropolitan Museum, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
This year’s theme, “Taoid: Weaving our Stories, Threading our Paths,” according to the NCCA, gives us a glimpse of the legacies of the past and how it remains to shape the present and the future.
SM City Pampanga’s assistant mall manager John Lo said the event is also being celebrated in other SM Supermalls all over the country.
The celebration is a recognition and celebration of the different aspects of our national cultural heritage – our traditional art forms and practices, important cultural structures both movable and immovable and other objects of national importance whether tangible and intangible.
“For SM City Pampanga, exhibits of heritage churches and retablos will be seen here,” Lo said.
Guest of honor and speaker during the said event was third district Representative Aurelio Gonzales Jr., who urged all sectors in Central Luzon to join hands in protecting tangible heritage through conservation.
Gonzales said Pampanga is the best example of a province that is rich in heritage and could be managed to become a tourism destination and showcase province on tangible and intangible heritage.
The exhibit features stunning shots of the baroque, classical and neo-classical churches in the Philippines. Included in the exhibit are Unesco World Heritage sites San Agustin Church in Manila; Nuestra SeΓ±ora de la Asuncion in Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur; San Agustin Church in Paoay, Ilocos Norte; and Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Church in Miag-ao, Iloilo.
Our very own Parish Church of Santiago Apostol and San Guillermo Parish Church also rank among the must-see churches in the exhibit. The event also featured paintings of the Art Association of the Philippines Angeles City Chapter on heritage churches in Pampanga.
The event provides a window of opportunity for mall-goers to see the various cultural gems of the country, and possibly, plan and chart on that next trip to these places. It is an event hoping to promote local tourism and promote the awareness of a section of local heritage that seems to be easily taken for granted.
