Board member leads mass circumcision in Macabebe
May 20, 2011
MACABEBE — Fourth district Board Member Ricardo Yabut led Thursday the mass circumcision of some 30 children at the Macabebe District Hospital as part of the Provincial Government’s social services program.
Yabut told Sun.Star Pampanga that the free circumcision was part of the initiative of Governor Lilia Pineda.
The surgeries were manned by provincial doctors and were sponsored through Provincial Government funds.
“This is part of the province-wide ‘Operation Tuli’ in various hospitals of the province. There are also ongoing operations until the end of the month on a per schedule basis,” Yabut said, adding that board members were tasked to screen children who would avail of the free surgery.
Yabut said that indigent children were given priority in availing the said free surgery. Circumcision is a coming-of-age tradition in the country where young boys are “required” by tradition to have themselves circumcised.
He said the Provincial Government’s move aims to provide safe operation for indigent children who could not afford the surgery costs and the needed medicines.
Yabut said that he personally shouldered the medical needs of those who underwent the operation.
