School to launch Pinatubo book
May 20, 2011
ANGELES CITY — The Holy Angel University (HAU) will launch the book “Pinatubo: The Volcano in Our Backyard” as part of the province-wide celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of Mount Pinatubo’s eruption.
The book, written by Robby Tantingco, director of the University’s Center for Kapampangan Studies, will be launched on June 14 (Tuesday), at 5 p.m. at the Academic Lecture Hall, St. Joseph Building.
The program will be preceded by a photo-art exhibit by Guy “Indra” Hilbero and Herminigildo Pineda, and followed by a concert, both at the University’s Plaza San Jose.
The book recounts the events before, during and after the June 15, 1991 eruption, dubbed as the world’s second largest volcanic eruption in the 20th century. It also contains personal anecdotes of Kapampangans who survived both the eruption and the succeeding lahar devastation.
“What makes Pinatubo such a gripping story is the number of amazing coincidences that accompanied the eruption,” Tantingco said. “Pinatubo erupted in the very same year the bases agreement was set to expire. The first of the eruptions happened on Independence Day, and Pinatubo really set us free from 100 years of dependence on the United States.”
“Another amazing coincidence is that a typhoon crossed the region at the very hour of the climactic eruption,” Tantingco added.
“Kapampangans aged 20 years and below don’t have a memory of Pinatubo, which is why we need to remind them of how the volcano changed our lives,” Tantingco said.
