Cabinet post awaits ex-guv in Aquino administration

May 16, 2011

CLARK FREEPORT — Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo said there is a Cabinet position waiting for former Pampanga governor Eduardo Panlilio.
โ€œI think there is always a place for Among Ed (Panlilio),โ€ Robredo said. โ€œThe only problem is he does not know yet whether heโ€™ll go back to priesthood or to public service.โ€
Panlilio, a priest on leave, ran for reelection during the 2010 gubernatorial elections but lost to incumbent Governor Lilia Pineda.
Panlilio served as the Liberal Partyโ€™s Pampanga chairman during the 2010 election and a known convenor of the Kaya Natin Movement along with Robredo and former Isabela Governor Grace Padaca.
โ€œBut Iโ€™m sure si (Padaca) will be going back to public life. Itโ€™s just a matter of figuring out exactly kung ano โ€˜yong role niya,โ€ Robredo said.
In earlier interviews, Panlilio said he wanted to go back to priesthood.
Allies of President Benigno Aquino III who lost during the 2010 race are expected to be appointed to various positions as the Commission on Elections ban on appointing 2010 losing bets ended on May 11.
Meanwhile, Robredo himself is unsure whether he will last as Department of Local and Interior Government (DILG) chief as long as Aquinoโ€™s term.
Robredo along with DILG Undersecretary Rico Puno were rumored to be relieved from their positions following jueteng controversies linked to the agency in September 2010.
โ€œI really canโ€™t answer (whether I can stay for one more year). But, in the next six months, there is a lot of work to do,โ€ Robredo said.
Robredo said he will finish the 15 places the DILGโ€™s Tapatan Road Show will go to. Clark Freeport is the second stop of the road show.
The road show aims to increase the level of awareness, participation and compliance of local officials to the different directives of the agency and encourage participation of stakeholders in promoting good local governance.
