Exhibit set for late master Kapampangan artist

May 12, 2011

ANGELES CITY — Local art enthusiasts will have a chance to see majority of the works of the late surreal painter Perfecto Mercado on May 27 at the Museo ning Angeles here.
The tribute exhibit, dubbed “Paninap: A Tribute to the Dreamscapist Perfecto S. Mercado,” is organized by the family and friends of the late artist who died late last month.
The exhibit will last until June 10.
Mercado was credited as among the most senior contemporary painters in the local provincial scene and had established a name for himself and his art among artists in Metro Manila.
Mercado did not start out as a surrealist painter, and like any other Kapampangan painters at the time when genre paintings were in great commercial value during the early decades of the Americans in Clark Field, he had always been a realist.
He was a copy artist for a long time – even spending some of his years as a graphic artist who manually painted huge movie billboards. The late artist soon became enthralled with surreal paintings upon returning to the Philippines after long years of working abroad.
According to Cebu Master Artist Jose Kimsoy Yap, “Mercado’s composition is something else, sometimes chaotic, but somehow there is a very strong sense of order when you look at them as a whole. His way of combining elements of both modern and conservative art makes his artworks quite unique.”
His works have influenced local artists here and have found their way into collections of big universities and schools in Pampanga, Angeles City and Metro Manila, as well as into the list of private collectors.
