Pampanga bishop to attend Pope John Paul IIโs beatification
April 25, 2011
ANGELES CITY โ San Fernando Archbishop Paciano Aniceto is scheduled to attend the beatification of the late Pope John Paul II at the Vatican City, Rome on May 1.
Monsignor Jun Mercado, Lourdes Church parish priest, said many Filipinos would attend the former Popeโs beatification, which is the fastest in the history of the Catholic Church.
At least 300,000 visitors are expected in Rome. Preparations are also under way even in the streets of the Italian capital, where giant outdoor screens, which will show the ceremony to a crowd, were put up.
The three-day program will feature the โblessedโ declaration of late Pope John Paul II, the last step before sainthood.
Pope John Paul II (16 October 1978 โ 2 April 2005) markedly changed previous Catholic practice of beatification. In October 2004, he had beatified 1,340 people โ more than the sum of all of his predecessorsโ since Pope Sixtus V (1585โ1590).
Pope Benedict XVI will celebrate the Beatification Mass for his widely admired predecessor Pope John Paul II at St. Peter’s Basilica.
Meanwhile, the archdiocese of San Fernando will sponsor an exhibit dubbed โThe Year of the Youth and Beatification of Blessed Pope John Paul IIโ at SM City Pampanga on April 26 to 28.
Photos and other materials showing works and good deeds of the former pope will be displayed in the exhibit.
