Group seeks salary hike for workers

April 20, 2011

THE Associated Labor Unions-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (ALU-TUCP) yesterday filed a petition for a P100 across-the-board wage increase for all workers in Central Visayas before the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB)
7.
ALU-TUCP director Ferdinand Jumapao said workers affected by the current economic crunch have no choice, but to demand an increase.

The RTWPB 7 is mandated under the Wage Rationalization Act (Republic Act 6727), motu propio or through petitions, to determine and fix minimum wages and to undertake studies and researches and surveys necessary to the attainment of its functions and objectives.
The petition signed by ALU-TUCP president De-mocrito Mendoza said that since the passage of the law in 1989, RTWPB 7 has issued several wage orders.
The last two were the P17 increase on May 22, 2008 and the P18 increase last Aug. 12.
โ€œThese increases, small as they are, have been overtaken by continuing increases in the prices of petroleum products, transport fares, and in basic goods and services,โ€ read the petition.
Assisting recovery
According to the petition, raised wages will contribute to a rising local demand for goods and services, further sustaining the economic recovery.
โ€œIf the workersโ€™ wages have to keep up with the rise in prices, and if workers are compensated for their contributions to the improvement of the regional economy, considering the P285 current daily minimum in Central Visayas, the difference between P285 and P385, or the P100, should now be given and awarded as the correct daily minimum wage increase for agricultural and non-agricultural workers,โ€ read the petition.
Atty. Jeoffrey Tabon, RTWPB 7 board secretary, said they might take up the petition after the Holy Week.
In a related development, members of AMA-Sugbo-KMU yesterday criticized the RTWPB 7 for stating there is no supervening event to declare wage order in the region during the โ€œKalbaryo sa mga Kabusโ€ rally on Colon St.
โ€œThis unstoppable oil price hike is the supervening event that shall urge RTWPB 7 to issue another commendable round of wage order to prevent wage starvation,โ€ said AMA-Sugbo-KMU secretary general Elpedio Caterbas
