Police assure safety of tourists, locals on Holy Week

Monday, April 19, 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO β€” More than 200 police officers will be deployed in strategic posts to ensure the safety of tourists and locals, who will witness the crucifixion rites in three villages here on Good Friday.
City police director Senior Superintendent Homer Penecilla, who also heads the Security Management Team of the Maleldo Committee 2011, said there will also be roving patrols, K-9 units, mobile escorts and quick reaction teams ready to assist the public in case of emergency situations.
β€œWe are always looking at worst-case scenarios here, and it is not a normal preparation,” Penecilla said.
The crucifixion rites, a yearly event supported by the City Government, will be held in Barangays Sta. Lucia, San Juan and San Pedro Cutud.
Five crucifixion rites will start at 9 a.m. in Barangay San Juan, followed by three in Barangay Sta. Lucia at 10 a.m. The highlight of the event will be in Barangay San Pedro Cutud where 14 crucifixions are expected.
Approximately 100,000 people are expected to participate and witness the event.
Meanwhile, the Maleldo Committee 2011 Traffic Management Team reminded the public to observe available signages that will guide them on alternative roads to avoid traffic.
The City Government clarified that there is no parking fee in designated parking lots. (Noelyn Tolentino)
