Gunmen kill three passengers in hijacking of bus on Mindanao
Gunmen killed an army officer, his wife and an armed guard and set fire to their bodies in a bus ambush in the strife-torn south of the Philippines, the military said yesterday.
Extortionists were believed to be behind the attack late on Tuesday, the latest in a series of raids on buses on Mindanao island, local military official Colonel Buenaventura Pascual said.
“We have launched a combined military and police operation to get these people who have been conducting extortion on the highway,” he said.
Four men posing as passengers flagged down the bus on a stretch of highway and shot two armed security men hired to provide security for the bus, the military said. One of the guards was killed and the other wounded.
Army Major Julistidi Arasid, a passenger, drew his pistol but the gunmen shot him and his wife. Their son, who was travelling with them, saved his life by jumping out a window, Pascual said. The bus company had been receiving extortion demands from “lawless elements” but would not identify them, he added.
The raid took place in an area where the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front is active. The military would not say if the front, which is in peace talks with the government, was involved.
