Nearly 15,000 afflicted with dengue in first 11 weeks

April 15, 2011

NEARLY 15,000 dengue cases have already been recorded by the Department of Health (DOH) during the first 11 weeks of this year.

Health Secretary Enrique Ona announced this on Thursday, adding that 14,837 cases of dengue and 89 deaths due to the disease have been reported.

“In the first two months of 2011, we’ve seen an early dramatic peak in the number of cases and there are no signs of letting up of this intensifying epidemic,” said Ona.

However, the Disease Surveillance Report of the DOH-National Epidemiology Center (NEC) said the number of cases this year is 4.23 percent lower than last year. About 15,493 cases were reported during the same period.

The death cases also went down from the 112 fatalities recorded last year by the DOH.

Most of the cases were again found in the National Capital Region (NCR), where there are 4,399 cases or 30 percent of the total cases nationwide. This is more than the double of the 1,984 cases recorded during the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the Central Luzon region had the highest mark up from last year as it went from only 632 in 2010 to 2,630 in 2011 for an increase of 316 percent.

Clustering of areas were also found in some barangays in La Union, Bataan, Bulacan, Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, Camarines Sur, Negros Occidental, Cebu, Leyte, Misamis Oriental, Cavao City, General Santos City, and South Cotabato.

In Metro Manila, clustering were also seen in the cities of Caloocan, Las Piรฑas, makati, Malabon, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Paraรฑaque, Pasig, Quezon City, San Juan, Taguig, and Valenzuela.

The DOH warned last month the public to prepare for a worse dengue problem this year “as temperatures warm and as rains come in longer.”
And in a bid to counter this, the DOH signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in a bid to provide ovi/larvicidal (O/L) traps and pellets against dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

“The best solution to the dengue problem is a pro-active and not a reactive stance which we got used to for years,” stressed Ona.

Under the MOU, the DOST shall be providing some 700,000 O/L trap and pellet kits to selected households having high dengue cases for free for the next six months.

For its part, the DOH will help identify these households and assist in the distribution of the trap systems.

The O/L kit, which aims to attract and kill the mosquitoes, their eggs and larva, is composed of a locally fabricated tin can painted black, a lawanit board and a liquid solution.

The liquid solution, called ovicidal or larvical agent, is a toxic that kills the eggs and larva that is poured on the tin can. The lawanit board is also positioned inside the can.

The O/L trap and pellet kit is an addition to the 4S campaign of the DOH, which stands for Search and Destroy, Self-protection, Seek early treatment, and Say no to indiscriminate fogging. (AMN/Sunnex)
