6,000 indigent students to get summer jobs

April 7, 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — At least 6,000 indigent students across Central Luzon will be beneficiaries of summer jobs that will be offered by the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) in the region.
The Dole, along with various Public Employment Service Offices (Pesos) all over the region, will implement the Special Program for Employment of Students (Spes) that seeks to provide summer jobs to students across the region.
Poor but deserving students from the tertiary, vocational, and technical levels will benefit from the project.
These beneficiaries will be chosen based on qualifications such as age, grades, income, and other pertinent documents.
The Spes program this year will be a year-round basis unlike in the previous years when it was only held during the summer or holiday season.
Of the 6,000 targeted for the year, 500 each will be allotted for Aurora and Bataan while 1,000 each will be allotted for Bulacan and Nueva Ecija. On the other hand, some 2,300 will be allotted for Pampanga and 200 for Tarlac. The remaining 500 will be allotted for Zambales.
The student-beneficiaries will be assigned to different participating companies and local government units (LGUs) all over the region.
The distribution was based on the Spes Provincial Performances in the last five years.
Like the previous years, the Dole will allocate 30 percent of its total pledges to its “Spes Babies,” or those student beneficiaries or dependents of displaced workers who started the program since their first year of schooling who want to complete their studies.
So far, the salaries of the students will be in accordance to the prescribed regional minimum wage (Wage Order 15) wherein 40 percent will be shouldered by the government, while the remaining 60 percent will be shouldered by the participating companies or local government units.
The Dole allotted at least P15 million for the program.
“We want to help our working students from the disadvantaged sector here in Central Luzon an opportunity to finish their schooling in order for them to find and land on decent and sustainable jobs or perhaps venture into entrepreneurship,” Leopoldo De Jesus, chief of the regional Dole, said.
The Spes program is mandated by Republic Act 7323, or the “Peso Act,” which aims to help poor but deserving students pursue their education by encouraging their employment during summer and/or Christmas vacations.
