Bizman dared to name names
March 26, 2011
ANGELES CITY — Members of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) in Pampanga has challenged businessman Renato Romero to drop the names of local newsmen allegedly under the payola lists of politicians.
“If there is anybody who has anything to say or any questions on the integrity of media, he has to come up with proofs. Magsalita siya, name names,” Ceasar Lacson, columnist of the regional newspaper Punto! Central Luzon, said.
Romero, vice chairman of the Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PamCham), earlier filed a P20-million libel case against Lacson and other staff of Punto!
He said some mediamen are under the monthly pay roll of some politicians.
“Nirerespeto natin ang pagsasalita niya subalit ito’y irresponsible na. Tayo sa media alam natin ‘yan, i-prove mo kung ano ang binabanat mo sa isang tao at magsalita ka, i-identify mo ‘yong tao,” Lacson said.
Lacson made the statements during the 16th month commemoration of the Ampatuan massacre, which happened in Maguindanao province, at a radio station in this city.
At least 53 media practitioners, including the 32 journalists, were brutally killed on November 2009 in Ampatuan town believed to be staged by former Datu Unsay mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr.
“This place is sacred because in June 2000, three Kapampangan media men were ambushed in front of this station. Marapat lang na magkaroon ng paggunita sa Ampatuan massacre sa lugar na kung saan nagkaroon ng din ng isa pang massacre,” Lacson said.
He said massacre to mediamen is not only limited to killing but to assailing their integrity and credibility, as well.
Ashley Jay Manabat, chairman of the NUJP-Pampanga, reiterated that the group respects the rights of Romero to state his opinions.
“Tayo ay naniniwala that everybody is entitled to his own opinion and that there is a constitutional guarantee of the freedom of speech and press kaya kahit anong sabihin niya, hindi tayo magdedemanda ng libel,” Manabat said.
Fred Villareal, vice president of the NUJP-Pampanga, said the national desk has already received a complaint from Romero. He said the letters seek the group to impose sanctions on Lacson.
The complaint will be discussed during the NUJP national desk director’s meeting including a response letter from Lacson.
“Here in our chapter, we don’t see any merit to the libel case Romero filed. Wala kaming nakikitang element ng malice do’n,” Villareal said.
