Tour guide hostage might have survived
Mar 14, 2011
Hong Kong tour bus guide had a chance of surviving last year’s Manila hostage tragedy if he had received emergency first aid at the scene, an inquest heard on Monday.
Timothy Rainer, an expert in accident and emergency medicine, was testifying before the Coroner’s Court on the tragic hostage crisis of August 23 last year. Eight Hongkongers out of a group of 21 tourists died, after being taken hostage by sacked Philippine police officer Rolando Mendoza, who was demanding re-instatement after his dismissal for corruption.
Rainer, a professor at the Chinese University, said tour guide Masa Tse Ting-chunn, 31, had a “57 per cent” chance of survival.
He said the bullet in Tse’s neck did not pass through his lungs or spinal cord. Therefore, the tour guide might have been able to survive for 30 minutes after being shot – if Tse had received proper medical treatment.
Rainer said hostage victim Jessie Leung Song-yi, 14, had a “36 to 60 per cent” chance of survival. She was shot through her left lung and had injuries to her right lung.
He noted that most fit people could survive with one lung. But Rainer said Yeung Yee-wa, 44, only had an “eight per cent” chance of survival.
He stressed that the other five deceased would not have survived – even if proper emergency treatment was offered immediately.
Outside the court, Coroner’s Officer Jat Sew-tong SC said that as well as the gunman’s brother, Gregorio, some Filipino witnesses had expressed an interest in testifying via videolink.
Jat declined to reveal their identities, but said they might testify as early as Tuesday.
The inquest before Coroner Michael Chan Pik-kiu will continue on Tuesday

With new golf courses springing up in and around Clark Philippines and an ever-increasing patronage by tourists from neighboring South Korea, Clark Freeport is short on hotel accommodation.
Even with the addition of 27 holes in 2009 and 2010, there is an acute shortage golf tee times for at least 5-6 months each year. Local players compete with frustrated (golf) tourists from Korea and China for tee times. Unfortunately Clark Philippines doesn’t have the luxury of vast tracts of land suitable for this type of development.
Mimosa offers 36 holes of championship golf, visitors can pay and play, busy during the weekends but not that difficult to get on or join up with a group to form a 4-ball. The new FAKCC offers 27 holes of world-class golf.
