Traffic problem ‘hinders economic growth’

ANGELES CITY — Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan said the worsening traffic condition is a hindrance to the growth of the local economy.
“The traffic problem in the city hinders the growth of the local economy, particularly the improvement of the business climate and development of tourism potential,” Pamintuan said during a traffic summit held at the city library here.
He also stressed that there is a need for a strict implementation of traffic rules.
Representatives from various transport groups and government agencies led by the City Government, private and other traffic-sector stakeholders participated in the summit.
Perennial traffic and transport problems plaguing the streets of Angeles City were discussed and addressed during the dialogue.
Pamintuan initiated the multi-sectoral summit in a bid to ease traffic congestion in the city.
“We are optimistic that this event will be an effective starting point to improve the city’s traffic and transport system because the City Government, in the spirit of enlightened and responsible governance, has joined forces with stakeholders to address perennial traffic and transport problems,” the mayor said.
The summit also intends to solicit proposals from various sectors and come up with a platform that would solve traffic problems.
Preparations have been underway earlier this month when stakeholders held a series of consultative meetings and workshops to draw up focal areas for the Angeles City Traffic and Transport Action Plan and the formulation of an Omnibus City Traffic Code.
Among the offices that spearheaded the summit are the Angeles City Traffic Enforcement and Management Office, Public Transport and Regulatory Office and the Angeles City Police Office Traffic Management and Enforcement Unit.
Pamintuan recently ordered the strict implementation of traffic rules and regulations across the city to ease traffic conditions in the city. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
