Lawyers’ group to celebrate Constitution Day
January 29, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A group of lawyers known for their outstanding performances will celebrate their anniversary with Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago next week.
Santiago, a known expert in constitutional and international law, will be the guest of honor and speaker during the celebration.
Lawyer Eligio Mallari, president of the Vanguard of the Philippine Constitution Incorporated (VPCI), said the group’s “24th Anniversary of the Constitution” will be held at the Fiesta Pavillion, Manila Hotel on February 2 at 9:30 a.m.
VCPI is a non-stock, non-profit organization that only admits lawyers of good standing. It celebrates Constitution Day every February 2 as it was the date of ratification of the 1987 Constitution.
Former President Corazon Aquino, during her term, issued an order that declared February 2 as “Constitution Day” in order “to instill in the hearts and minds of Filipino the democratic principles and the noble and lofty ideas in the Constitution.”
At least 300 officers and members of the group from 13 regions of the country are expected to attend the anniversary celebration.
The Board of Governors of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, along with other well-known lawyers and businessmen, is also expected to join the anniversary celebration.
Previous speakers to the VCPI celebration were Senators Edgardo Angara, Rene Saguisag and Richard Gordon; former Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro; former Solicitor General Eduardo Nachura; and former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. (Charlene Cayabyab)
