8,725 migratory birds visit Candaba wetlands

Monday, January 24, 2011
CANDABA – At least 8,725 migratory birds were found roaming around the Candaba Wetlands during the 2011 Asian Water Bird Census (AWC) held last Sunday at the Wildlife Reserve Park in Sitio Dona Simang, Visal San Pablo.

The census was spearheaded by Mike Lu, Wild Bird Club of the Philippines (WBCP) president, and other club members in coordination with the Municipal Government officials headed by Mayor Jerry Pelayo.
Lu noted, however, that the number of migratory birds here has significantly decreased compared to the 11,000 recorded last year. He said, “The ducks did not stay, maybe because of loss of habitat.”

The WBCP president also said that during their previous visit in the wildlife reserve park, most of its areas were flooded. However, with the recent census, the water level is no longer the same, he observed.

“This could have contributed to the decrease of migratory birds here,” he claimed.

With this, Leny Manalo, Mayor Pelayo’s chief of staff, said the water level has naturally decreased due to climate change. In fact, he said, most villages here were not submerged in flood waters last year.

The Asian Water Bird Census, initiated in 1987, aims to provide the basis for estimates of water bird populations and monitor changes in the number of water birds and their distribution by regular and standardized counts of representative wetlands.

The Asian Water Bird Census is part of the global water bird monitoring program of the International Water Bird Census coordinated by the Wetlands International and the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau.

Record

Before the year ended, the Candaba wetlands marked another Philippine record when for the first time a Greater White-fronted Goose–a bird usually living in Northern and central North America, as well as Europe–was spotted.

Members of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines–Alex Loinaz and Sylvia Ramos–first captured the Greater White-fronted Goose, which were flying freely here.

The Greater White-fronted Goose (Anser Albifrons) is known in Europe simply as the White-fronted Goose, and the Greater White-fronted Goose (or Greater Whitefront) in North America.

Other rare migratory birds–such as the seven purple swamphens (Porphyrio porphyrio), Chinese pond herons (Ardeola bacchus), and black-crowned night-herons (Nycticorax nycticorax)–were also previously included in the list of species documented in the said wetlands by birdwatchers.

The water bird census is also part of the incoming Ibon-Ebun Festival, which will be held on February 5-6. (Herbert P. Mapiles)
