Development of Clark-Manila railway plans reiterated

Monday, January 24, 2011
CLARK FREEPORT – A top official of the Manila North Tollways Corporation (MNTC) recently mentioned anew the plans to develop a railway system linking the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) here to Metro Manila.

The plan is proposed by business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan of the Metro Pacific Investment Corporation (MPIC).
MNTC President and Chief Executive officer Rodrigo E. Franco told local newsmen over the weekend that Pangilinan has commissioned a separate firm to conduct a feasibility study for the proposed project. “That is his dream,” Franco said.

However, the MNTC official expressed pessimism over the immediate realization of the railway project, unless the DMIA fully operates as an international airport and the country’s premier gateway.

According to Franco, the railway “will not make money” and would only support the airport operation.

Pangilinan earlier said the plan is to construct the new railway between the lanes of the North Luzon Expressway.

Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC) president Victor Jose I. Luciano previously said that Pangilinan expressed interest to develop the airport’s passenger terminal.

Luciano said Pangilinan’s firm is willing to tie up with the group of Ramon Ang of the San Miguel Corporation.

Pampanga officials welcomed this development, saying the operation of DMIA as an international airport will benefit not only Central Luzon but the whole country. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
