Candaba folks hit plan to scrap ‘Ibon-Ebon’
CANDABA, Pampanga–Local folks here were surprised with the recent pronouncement of incoming town mayor Rene Maglanque about his plan to abolish the celebration of Ibon-Ebon Festival.
The residents said that although the festival may not be able to help boost the local economy, it uplifts the cooperation and unity among the participating groups from all the villages in the town.
“The decision to shelve the Ibon-Ebon festival should not be drastic. Studies should be made first on what should be done according to their priorities,” said Loida Batas, a resident here.
Batas said that from a “never heard municipality,” Candaba was placed in the world map in terms of conservation and protection of environment which was bolstered by the Ibon-Ebon celebration.
One of the more colorful events in Pampanga, the Ibon Ebon Festival (literally means “bird- egg”) features the municipality of Candaba as the home of thousands of migratory birds flying in from different parts of the globe, and at the same time showcases its growing duck-egg industry.
Ibon-Ebon festival, which brought the name of Candaba to fame not only in the province but in the whole country, was a brain-child of outgoing mayor Jerry Pelayo.
Instead of the Ibon-Ebon Festival, Maglanque said he is planning to create another festival that would target the main product of Candaba which would make the festivity as marketing event and arm of the town in the promotion of its industry and tourists attraction at the same time.
Maglanque said he will definitely cut the budget intended for the festival from P5 million to P1 million and the savings will go to the education sector.
He expressed belief that the budget allocated for only few days of Ibon-Ebon celebration is too big, which according to him is best if given to indigent students who wanted to finish their studies.
Maglanque said his focus is more on the education of the indigent children who are dreaming to alleviate poverty that their families suffer from.
However, the incoming mayor clarified that this plan is still subject to consultation with the local officials, residents and other stakeholders.
