Gov. Pineda’s timely call

A few days ago, Pampanga Governor Lilia “Nanay” Pineda has called on barangay officials and the Philippine National Police to join efforts in removing the province from the list of election hot spots or areas of concern or the watch list of the Commission on Election in relation to the coming elections in 2013.

The call is much timely considering the nearing of Christmas and the cessation of hostilities among warring groups such as the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) versus the New People’s Army and the Muslim armed groups. The AFP has announced a truce in deference to the celebration of yuletide.

It can be recalled that Pampanga was one of the said election hot spots as announced by the Department of the Interior and Local Government a couple of weeks ago. Just a few days after the announcement, two separate incidents involving the killing of a village chief and the injuring of another.

Other crimes in the province although seemed not to be election-related have likewise been noted involving businessmen and those criminals riding-in-tandem. On a different note, the killing of the village chief in Mexico town may or may not be election-related since the victim was said to have been engaged in various scuffles with other groups not involved in politics.

Governor Pineda, after ensuring the provision of basic services to Kapampangans, would always want the province to be a haven of peace. A peaceful province equals a livable and happy community for all. Peace entices investors to pour in investments thus bringing forth more growth and development.

During the activity, the Governor likewise urged barangay officials not to engage in partisan politics when the campaign period starts on January 13 for national candidates and March 29 for local candidates.

She also said to them to allow any political candidates to campaign in their respective villages and be fair and square to anyone making their bids to any political post. The same call is proper and fitting as it was noted in the past that some barangay officials wouldn’t allow some candidates that they are not affiliated with.

Pampanga top police Senior Superintendent R’winPagkalinawan meanwhile announced that there are more or less 7,500 gun owners in the province who have failed to secure gun permits and documents relating to the possession and carrying of firearms in public places.

He appealed to gun enthusiasts to cause the re-registration of their firearms to avoid encountering problems and to ensure that their unlicensed firearms would not disrupt the conduct of peaceful and orderly election. It also aims to neutralize armed groups from engaging into political harassments and election-related violence.

When election nears, it was observed that loose firearms proliferate as they are used by armed groups and private armies of some politicians during campaign. In the history of Philippine elections, there were a number of candidates who fell from assassins’ bullet before the polling day comes.

Peace may be elusive in some parts of the country but not in Pampanga by statistics. I join the Governor in proving that Pampanga is a province of peace-loving citizens including their leaders. There may be some incidents of petty crimes but all those are isolated cases perpetrated by those with criminal minds from other provinces.
