State of Philippine population report launched in C. Luzon

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–A report that gives us a broad view on the current condition of the country’s population, environment and natural resources, and Filipinos’ health status can now be seen in a 92-page book entitled State of the Philippine Population Report 5 (SPPR5) as the Commission on Population (POPCOM) Central Luzon launched it in this city Wednesday.
The book carries the theme “Seeking a Healthy Balance: Population, Health, and Environmental Integration” which integrates the population-health-environment (PHE) approach – a model for development that considers the interplay of the three areas wherein “efforts to protect and preserve the environment are done in tandem with efforts to improve people’s health and quality of life.”
POPCOM Regional Director Ma. Aurora Quiray disclosed the report will make us “aware of the issues tackled and what can we do to integrate programs to solve these.”
It attempts to provide a comprehensive picture of the inter-linkages of the PHE factors, how these are being integrated, and the challenges that come ahead in pursuing integrated approaches to these interconnected issues, she added.
Population situation
Latest data from Census disclosed the total population of the country is now close to 90 million wherein Region IVA or CALABARZON topped the most populous regions with 11.7 million; followed by the National Capital Region with 11.5 million; and Central Luzon with 9.7 million.
The data further stated that “more than one-third of the entire population of the country live in these three regions.”
On the population side of the report the issue revolves around the concern on growing population directly caused by high fertility and unmanaged urbanization, among others, Quiray explained.
Nature
The document also provides a picture on how the nature is holding up with the population pressure. It gives latest data on ensuring food security as primary function of environment and the various factors that impact on the conditions of environment and the people.
“At the core of these environmental data is the realization that our environment is indeed in a fragile state. The current state of environment cannot hold up with the insatiable needs of people,” the regional director said.
Status of land classification by the National Statistical Coordination Board revealed that the country’s total land area is 30,000,000 hectares while land forest land is 15,792,418 ha.
And many of the critical forest areas have been designated as protected areas which are classified as either natural park, protected land or seascape, natural monument or landmark resource, wildlife sanctuary, natural biotic area, or marine reserve where a total of 3.2 million ha of this land is now protected.
The country is experiencing climate change, the usual rainy season that occurs June to July – even this December is occurring which is “very rare.” Devastating typhoons, the recent storm Pablo, and the southwest monsoon had brought big changes in the country, and this report will give us the “awareness” we needed on the three issues being discussed and we can “integrate the programs” that will benefit us and contribute to the national development, Quiray said. ●Joelyn Baluyut
