City observes National Flag Day

ANGELES CITY – Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan led other city officials in celebrating the National Flag Day, commemorating the day when the Philippine flag was first unfurled 114 years ago during the Battle of Alapan.
A brief program hosted by the Angeles City Tourism Office (ACTO) coincided Monday’s flag raising rites at the City Hall grounds with performances from the Angeles City Rondalla and the Sinukwan Performing Arts.Pamintuan said “displaying the flag is a way of renewing the spirit of nationalism, patriotism and the love for freedom.”Republic Act 8491, Section 26 declares May 28 to June 12 of each year as “Flag Days,” during which period all offices, agencies and instrumentalities of government, business establishments, institutions of learning and private homes are enjoined to display the flag.The period commemorates the “Battle of Alapan” in May 28, 1898 when the national flag was first unfurled in Imus, Cavite by General Emilio Aguinaldo and culminates on June 12 or 15 days afterwards when the Philippine Flag was waved in full view of the world following the formal proclamation of independence in Kawit, Cavite.Pamintuan stressed that many people remain unfamiliar not only with the date of the celebration but what the National Flag Day calls for: “respect for the flag.”The mayor said he will request the Division of City Schools here to issue a memorandum that will teach and remind students on the history and significance of the Philippine flag.“This will strengthen the national pride among our students,” he explained.Pamintuan instructed the City Engineer’s Office to install or display Philippine flags in City Government buildings and major thoroughfares on or before May 28 to June 30.Pamintuan encouraged Angeleños, especially businessmen, to display the Philippine flag within their establishments on the same period.Angeles City is the 7th official heritage site for the simultaneous flag raising rites commemorating the June 12 Independence Day.The local tourism office here has announced that the city was once again chosen as one of the sites in the country where the ceremonial hoisting of the Philippine Flag will be held on June 12.The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) has officially included the Pamintuan House in this city in the list of historical sites for the Independence Day celebration.The simultaneous celebration of the Independence Day in historical places will be at the Gen. Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite, Barasoain Church, Malolos City, Bulacan, Mausoleo de los Veteranos dela Revolucion, Manila North Cemetery, Gat Andres Bonifacio Monument, Caloocan City, Pinaglaban Memorial Shrine in San Juan City and the Pamintuan House in Angeles City.
