OFWs score Aquino failure to meet inauguration promise

MANILA — Twenty months after Benigno Aquino III was inaugurated as the new president, he has continued to fail in his promise to “discourage” aspiring overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from going abroad.
This was according to labor group, Migrante International, saying the record high of OFW remittances simply prove that the government continues to rely on peddling Filipino workers abroad.
“Under the Aquino administration the labor thrust is still the same of previous administrations – the intensification of peddling unemployed and underemployed Filipino workers who were forced to accept dirty, dangerous, and dehumanizing jobs abroad without concrete protection for their well being, safety and labor rights,” said Migrante International in a statement.
“This means that the government continues to fail in creating local jobs with decent pay and benefits,” it furthered.
The OFW group said such a fact cannot be denied as the increase in remittances is “directly proportional” to the steady swelling of OFWs.
On Wednesday, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas reported that a new record of $20.117 billion have been remitted by OFWs for the year 2011.
It can be recalled that in his inaugural speech last June 2010, Aquino had vowed to “discourage” Filipinos from seeking foreign employment by creating more local job opportunities.
“Layunin nating paramihin ang trabaho dito sa ating bansa upang hindi na kailanganin ang mangibang-bansa para makahanap ng trabaho,” Aquino had said in his speech.
Migrante, then, called on the Aquino administration to look anew into the possibility of implementing a genuine agrarian reform program equipped with allied services and technological support to the farmers as well as the nationalization of basic industries such as oil and mining.
“These will serve as our country’s economic backbone going to real economic progress and development… (Because) for us, the government’s labor export program is not a reliable, and in fact dwindling, economic measure providing band-aid solution to the country’s economic woes,” said Migrante.
