Kapampangan film, finalist at Asian Film Festival

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A Kapampangan film had made it to this year’s Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival (JAFF) in Indonesia, with the film highlighting the best locations in Pampanga and the talent of local artists and visionaries.
The film “Manenaya”, co-produced and filmed by director Richard Soriano Legaspi, made it to the ranks of finalists in Asia.
The JAFF is the only film festival in Indonesia that focuses on development of Asian cinemas, with a humble character and its role for the society, education, entertainment, tourism and cultural arts.
The films presented in JAFF are curated by Philip Cheah.
Each year, JAFF gives awards to the best film in Asia through several awards such as Golden Hanoman Awards, Silver Hanoman Awards, Netpac Awards, Geber Awards, and Blencong Awards.
Manenaya (Waiting) is a story of a determined woman, and her journey through life under the backdrop of the various landscapes of Pampanga.
She brings with her a wooden casket for her husband, a victim of political killings. The film is a journey in search for truth and personal triumph through the challenges of life.
The film stars Teatru Ima at Arti member Agnes Romero, who was personally chosen by the director after her fabulous performances for the theater group’s recent musicals in Pampanga and at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
Other actors include Beth Masangkay and Bor Ocampo of the Film Academy of Pampanga. The cinematography for the film was done by Ruston Banal. The film is co-produced by Rona Manalac.
Legaspi, the director, is a Fine Arts major who studied advertising at the University of the East. He also graduated at the prestigious Asian Film Academy of Busan International Film Festival in South Korea. He has represented the Philippines in different International Film Festivals around the world.
Legaspi also received awards and citations for his film “Ambulancia” starring Alan Paule; “Hand-Painted Feathers” with Bembol Roco and Katherine Luna; a Korean produced film entitled “Escape to Nothingness”; and his first multi-awarded full length film “Paano Ko Sasabihin” starring ABS-CBN Katorse talents Enchong Dee and Erich Gonzales.
Banal said the film features soundtracks from Kapampangan albums. The film features the songs of Andy Alviz, while Palangca Awardee Seymour Barrios Sanches-Carlos rendered the English subtitling of the film.
The group said it is hoping the film would get favorable reviews and achieve honors for the province and the country.
