Workers get double pay on Independence Day

EMPLOYEES expected to work in during the Philippines’ Independence Day are expected to receive twice their daily pay based on the rules set by the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole).
Private employers are mandated to follow pay rules set for regular holidays including this coming Sunday, Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said in an advisory.

“Private sector employers in the country are enjoined to comply with core labor standards, such as the pay rules to be observed during the holiday for the benefit of their workers,” said Baldoz.
Under the rules covering holidays, workers are entitled to 200 percent of their basic wages on the first eight hours and an additional 30 percent of their hourly rates on the said day should they be forced to render overtime.
However, if the holiday is the employee’s day off and is worked, the employee is entitled to 230 percent of his/her basic wage on the first eight hours plus another 30 percent of the day’s rate for work in excess of regular hours.
But if the holiday is unworked, employees are entitled to 100 percent of the regular daily rate, the Dole said.
On December 20, President Benigno Aquino III issued Proclamation No. 84 declaring the 113th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence as a regular holiday nationwide. (AMN/Sunnex)
