Angeles participates in 113th Independence Day rites

June 1, 2011
By Reynaldo G. Navales

ANGELES CITY — The tourism office here announced that the city was chosen as one of the sites in the country where the ceremonial hoisting of the Philippine Flag will be held on June 12, the 113th Independence Day commemoration.
Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan said the National Government officially included Angeles City in the list of historical sites where the anniversary of the Philippine Independence will be celebrated.
The mayor said the Pamintuan Mansion, which used to be a clearing house of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), was officially named by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) as a “heritage site”.
“With this recognition, the Pamintuan Mansion now becomes one of the official venues for the simultaneous flag-raising ceremonies which will be held in various historical sites in the country on Independence Day,” the mayor explained.
The simultaneous celebration of the Independence Day in historical places will be at the General Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite, Barasoain Church, Malolos City, Bulacan, Mausoleo de los Veteranos dela Revolucion, Manila North Cemetery, Gat Andres Bonifacio Monument, Caloocan City, Pinaglaban Memorial Shrine in San Juan City and the Pamintuan Mansion in Angeles City.
Last May 28, the Philippine National Flag Day or “Araw ng Watawat” served as the kick-off ceremony leading to the actual celebration of the Philippine Independence.
The June 12 celebration in this city will start at 6:30 a.m. with a civic-military parade from the Museo ning Angeles to the Pamintuan Mansion.
Expected to join the parade are city and barangay officials, representatives from other government agencies, private sector representatives and other dignitaries.
The day culminates with a program and cultural presentation and a re-enactment of the First Anniversary Celebration of Philippine Independence, which was led by then General Emilio Aguinaldo at the Pamintuan Mansion on June 12, 1989.
In the course of the fledgling Philippine Republic’s struggle against the United States, Aguinaldo temporarily moved the seat of government from Kawit, Cavite to Pampanga to what is now known as the Pamintuan Mansion.
The Pamintuan Mansion is the ancestral house of the Pamintuan clan, built by Don Mariano Pamintuan, whose prominent members include Fashion designer Patis Tesoro and Mayor Pamintuan.
It changed ownership several times since 1899. The edifice also served as the town’s municipal hall. Later, the property was acquired by the BSP.
With the BSP branch moving to a bigger location in the City of San Fernando last year, the BSP recently decided to turn over the property to the national government, through the Department of Finance by way of a property dividend. In turn, the DOF transferred the same to the NHCP.
According to Ambeth Ocampo, NHCP Chairman, the Pamintuan Mansion will be converted into a museum – a fitting transformation for the historic edifice.
Pamintuan said his administration will help the NHCP in developing the Pamintuan Mansion into a historical center and museum for the people of Angeles City and Pampanga.
“We are willing to help in making the Pamintuan Mansion a museum for the people of this city. It is a historical site that we could be proud of and with the mansion in under the care of the NHCP, we are sure that it would be given its rightful respect as a historical structure,” Pamintuan added.
