Vintners’ mission to China; Buy Wines in the Philippines

Subic-Clark Wine Shop reports news about wine: Vintners’ mission to China

May 28, 2011

Forty Napa Valley winery owners and managers have just returned from the eighth visit to China sponsored by the Napa Valley Vintners.
The tour was aimed at promoting and protecting Napa Valley wines, which are becoming popular — but also facing some challenges — in the Republic of China.
The week-long trip started April 25 and visited both Shanghai and Beijing, two of China’s largest cities. The visit included more wineries than on any previous trips.
“China is an incredibly strategic market from a number of perspectives, including its steadily growing economy that finds more and more of its people with income to purchase fine wines from around the world,” said Linda Reiff, the executive director of the 400-plus member trade group. “For this reason, it’s important for Napa Valley wineries to be in the market and on the world stage representing the best from the United States.”
The vintners met with distributors and restaurant buyers, media, targeted consumers and political leaders at a variety of tasting venues in both cities throughout the week.
One of those on the trip was Kathryn Hall, owner of wineries in St. Helena and Rutherford. She went with her son, David, but has also been on Vintners’ missions with Mike Reynolds, president and CEO or the winery.
Hall has a distributor in Shanghai, but its business there isn’t very big yet. “We hope it will grow,” she said.
She noted that quite a few distributors attended the meetings.
Longer term, she said that not only does Hall need to build its brand in China, but so does the Napa Valley. “It’s the classic case of what Robert Mondavi said, ‘A rising tide lifts all boats,’” she said. “We need to work together to that aim.”
That’s especially true since the French were there first.
As part of that aim, the former ambassador to Austria and some others went to a dinner to encourage participation in Auction Napa Valley.
She recognizes that the Chinese culture thinks long-term, so she doesn’t expect immediate results, just long-term benefits.
Another participant was Janet Viader, who handles sales and marketing for her family’s winery in St. Helena. The winery already has two importers in China, but she wanted to network and open the market because sales have been slow.
It was her first trip to China — her mother had been on a similar trip two years ago — but she was impressed. “I was very inspired to pursue opening the Chinese market for us,” she said.
She said the tastings were packed and there was a lot of interest among both the trade and consumers.
Viader found the market in Shanghai more international and informed about wine. “The French pioneered the market two decades ago, and they know cabernet sauvignon.” She also sensed that people want to serve wines that show off to their friends and associates.
“Bordeaux is the reference for them, so producers with Bordeaux varieties have an advantage (as Viader does).”
She found that a lot of young people attended the tastings and they really like wine. In Shanghai, about half the audience were expatriates, half local, and many Chinese born in America also attended.
Viader said the trip was well worthwhile, and though she hasn’t signed any importers yet, she’s heard from three and met with a representative of the second largest importer in China.
Another vintner who made the trip was Marc Cohen of Howell at the Moon winery.
Cohen has a successful distributor in Shenzhen, but it wasn’t interested in serving the other markets. The owner did come on the trips to Beijing and Shanghai, however, which was undoubtedly a benefit.
He also said the meetings were well attended, and he met with a number of importers/distributors. He hasn’t picked any yet, but has already interviewed two of them.
“The Napa Valley Vintners did a great job,” he said. “They really drew people, including more than 200 consumers to some tastings.” Cohen warned, however, that selling in China is not like here. “There are no rules.”
In addition to promoting wine, the visit was intended to help strengthen protection for the Napa Valley name in China, which has few regulations on wine and naming. Reiff said. “We use these market visits as an opportunity to work on important industry issues as well.”
“Through trade and consumer education and awareness and working with government leaders and influencers we hope to set a solid foundation for Napa Valley wines as the market expands going forward,” Reiff said.
