Women’s Month launched

March 1, 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The City Government of San Fernando launched its annual month-long celebration of the International Women’s Month on Monday.

Various women’s groups from all villages joined the celebration dubbed as “Sandaang Taong Pakikibaka ng Kababaihan: Karapatan Isulong! Ipaglaban.”

It is a concerted event of the city’s Women’s Month 2011 Executive Committee and the Gender and Development office.

Executive Committee chairman Dr. Leticia Yap said issues being discussed in this year’s celebration are the following:
* rights of women against all forms of violence;
* protection against accidents, disasters and calamities;
* political participation;
* equal treatment in law, education and training as well as sports;
* level participation and opportunities of women in the military and police;
* portrayal of women in media as dignified and respectable;
* opportunity to avail of two-month maternity leave with compensation;
* equal rights on all aspects of marriage and family life;
* economic and environmental sustainability;
* a stop to women trafficking; and
* a global partnership uplifting the rights of women in business and government.

Apart from seminars and workshops, there were street dancing, theatrical plays and concerts, health programs, and creation of barangay women’s councils, among others, as well.

Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, who said he is a member of the group “Samahan ng mga Masunurin sa Asawa” (Samasa), paid tribute to women as pillars of development and core of a good family.

“Paano mo naman sila hindi bibigyan ng importansiya, sila ang kasama natin sa pang-araw araw na buhay. Pag nawala ang pag-ibig sa buhay ng tao na dala ng ating kababaihan ay wala ka na bilang tao,” said Rodriguez. (Jovi T. De Leon)
