Tulabut: Country’s roads, nation’s greatness

January 26, 2011
HAVING good roads is good. Having expressways is a lot better.
The mere thought of having these makes one feel the convenience of road travel, even if it were to cover few hundred kilometers. I can go the distance, literally at that.
With the convenience we get from the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) serving as basis, one can already feel some form of relief from road travel pains by merely imagining that. Sooner or later, there will be faster and more comfortable ways to go to the busy north/south harbors and even father south.
The Manila North Tollways Corporation (MNTC) will soon make us stop hoping and imagining more convenient ways to travel to the western and southern portions of Mega Manila.
First in the offing will be the 8-kilometer NLEx-Harbor Link that will connect the main NLEx to the Manila North Road in Valenzuela City, and eventually to the C-3 Road that leads to the port area in the City of Manila. Construction is set to commence in the last quarter of this year as right-of-way acquisitions are now being handled by the government.
When completed, this P8-billion project will decongest traffic, especially in the Balintawak–EDSA area as cargo trucks can use this road in going to and from the harbors via the C-3 interchange en route to the NLEx.
This is another faster way to access Metro Manila, in the same comfort and convenience that the NLEx-Mindanao Link had given motorists bound for Quezon City and other eastern parts of the Metro.
These so-called “links” enable motorists and commuters to bypass the all-jammed-and-almost-hopeless A. Bonifacio and EDSA.
The Harbor Link will also pave the way for another jewel of an infrastructure when completed -– the proposed Connector Road, a 13-kilomoter elevated expressway being proposed by Manny V. Pangilinan (MVP) that would connect the NLEx from C-3 to Skyway in Makati City.
What would normally be traversed for about two hours in existing roads will just be a mere 15 to 20 minutes of travel when this is realized, in probably the next three years. In short, this 4-lane road will create a seamless physical link between two major expressways in Luzon’s north and south ends.
How much would this Connector Road cost? A whopping P17 billion.
With MVP’s bullishness and the known gung-ho trademark of Metro Pacific in developing the country’s major infrastructures (utilities, hospitals, information and communication networks, etc.), this gargantuan undertaking is realizable.
