Truck loaded with hospital waste intercepted

BACOLOR – Authorities intercepted a truck loaded with hospital waste about to dump its load along the Bacolor portion of the Mega Dike late Thursday evening.
Mayor Jomar Hizon said the truck was suspected to have come from Metro Manila and is among haulers who illegally dump toxic wastes in areas of the province especially when checkpoints have been pulled out in wee hours of the night.
Hizon added that the truck was impounded and brought to the municipal hall. But municipal officials said the truck has been released after paying a fine of P5,000.
Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Officer Art Punsalan, who got wind of the report, said that authorities should intensify moves to check on the illegal dumping of hospital wastes coming from Metro Manila.
“It may not be within our jurisdiction but local government units who intercept such hauls should investigate further, penalize and sanction such unscrupulous haulers since it aggravates our garbage problems,” said Punsalan.
