Town police assailed for human rights violation

STA. ANA–The local police here was assailed by Councilor Henry Illecas of Angat, Bulacan, for alleged violation of human rights resulting in the death of his driver in a shootout here on Tuesday.
“This is a clear violation of human rights,” said Illecas, who earlier identified the victim as Carlos de Leon, a longtime driver who, according to him, had faithfully rendered his duty as a family driver.
He claimed that the police committed a mistake in shooting De Leon. “Carlos is not a carnapper and he had no participation in what happened to us. He is also a victim,” he said.
The councilor believes the local police failed to exercise due diligence in ascertaining the identity of the suspect and his victim.
“Nagtataka lang ako bakit pa siya pinutukan e nakita naman nilang walang baril? Paano siya makakaputok kung walang nga siyang baril? (I’m wondering why they were shooting at him when they saw he didn’t have a gun. How could he have fired at the police when he didn’t have a gun?)” the councilor declared in an earlier interview.
Meanwhile, it was learned that officials of the Pampanga Provincial Police Office (PPPO) has relieved Chief Insp. Edgardo Corral as the town police chief, as well as six of his men who conducted the checkpoint and later on took part in the shootout.
Corral was earlier asked to comment on the allegation of human rights violations, but preferred to remain silent on the matter while the investigation is still ongoing. (Herbert P. Mapiles)
