‘Top food-processing firms should inspire small traders’
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Gov. Lilia Pineda urged small traders in Pampanga during the recent distribution of loan assistance for livelihood at the Lubao Gym to “dream big but adhere to hardwork” to achieve success.
Citing two of the top food-processing companies based in the province, Pineda said businesses should draw inspiration from the “success stories” of the Mekeni Food Corporation and the Pampanga’s Best. Both firms are now two of the major players in the country and have earlier started to market their products abroad, including United States of America, Middle East and Asia.
Pineda said, “one of them started with one kilo of tocino (sweetened pork) and is now one of the biggest food companies in the country.” She was referring to the humble beginnings of Pampanga’s Best, whose plant is in this city.
Mekeni, on the other hand, is based in Porac town and is one of the top three major suppliers of hotdogs in the country.
Mamerto Gatus, head of the Provincial Cooperative and Entrepreneurial Development Office (PCEDO), said the provincial government has allotted at least P39 million for its loan assistance for livelihood benefitting 5,030 small traders in Pampanga as of last week.
Gatus, Pineda and Second District Board Member Olga Frances David-Dizon led the distribution of 215 beneficiaries in Lubao town on Friday.
The latest beneficiaries of Negosyo king Panyulung Program (NPP) included persons with disabilities (PWD).
Gatus said Pineda had initially allotted P10 for NPP which increased to almost four-fold in less than two years.
“It’s a very good program pushed by the governor. Many are benefitting, notably those who really deserve the assistance,” said Gatus, whose office assisted Pineda in the turn-over of P1.9 million to beneficiaries at the Lubao Gym.
Gatus said the loan assistance is payable in six months to one year at no interest. He added that the loan ranges from P5,000 to P10,000 per person.
Pineda, in her speech, urged the beneficiaries “to make the most of the assistance.”
Georgia Del Mundo of Cangatba, Porac said “it’s indeed a big help.” She added that she had used to get her capital from loan sharks, reducing her opportunity to earn more.
“I wish the governor starts more projects that can help the poor who want to rise from the bondage of poverty,” said Del Mundo in the dialect.
Pineda also turned over “Nego-Kart” to some of the NPP vendor-beneficiaries. ● JP
