About Wines from Chambolle-Musigny, Burgundy of France
Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru wines are those produced under the strictest conditions of the Chambolle-Musigny appellation, exclusively from grapes grown within the village’s twenty-four officially classified Premier Cru vineyard sites, or climats.
Chambolle-Musigny itself is a tiny commune in the Cote de Nuits sub-region of Burgundy, with a population of fewer than four hundred people, but an historic and widespread reputation for its high quality wines. Its Premier Cru wines are exclusively red wines made from Pinot Noir, and come from a strip of vineyards which run from north to south, just below the village, on the mid-slope of the Cote d’Or Escarpment.
The classic Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru wine is powerful yet refined; characterized by its balance of richness and elegance. The village’s better Premier Cru wine is considered to be some of the finest Pinot Noir wine available; those cuvees from the Les Amoureuses and Les Charmes climats are the most highly respected. These two sites are located at the southern edge of the Chambolle’s Premier Cru vineyard belt, abutting the Premier Cru vineyards of neighboring Vougeot.
The climate in Chambolle-Musigny, as throughout the Cote d’Or, is of continental type, with elevated seasonal and diurnal temperature variation helping to establish balanced acids and sugars in the local wines. While all of the village’s vines benefit from this mesoclimate, the Premier Cru sites also benefit from superior soil make-up, being located on the fine, well-drained soils of the mid-slope. Apart from its Premier Cru vineyards, Chambolle-Musigny is also home to two Grand Cru sites; Le Musigny and the majority of the Bonnes-Mares.
