Stilt houses sustain strong winds

CANDABA — Several stilt houses at the Dayatan area in Barangay San Agustin here have sustained strong winds brought by Typhoon “Pedring” (international codename: Nesat), which struck the province Tuesday.
“Narinig pa lang namin sa radyo ang tungkol sa bagyong Pedring ay tinalian na namin agad ang bubong ng aming sa bahay para hindi liparin ng malakas na hangin (We secured the roof of our houses immediately after we heard news on radio about the typhoon),” said Marites Meneses, owner of one of the stilt houses.
She said they are always ready as their houses are made of light materials.
Meneses, like other Candabeños, consider every typhoon as a source of life, learning to adapt and live with the situation.
They prepare their fishing gears, boats, flashlights, and food for fishing expedition, as it is expected they would catch more fish during these times.
“Ang pagiging handa sa kalamidad ang isang katangian ng mga taga rito. Kaya nananatili matatag bayuhin man ng malakas na bagyo,” another resident here said.
The local government, meanwhile, mobilized the municipal disaster council to conduct 24-hour monitoring and immediately respond in case of emergencies.
