Solon wants revival of subsidy for farmers
STA. RITA, Pampanga–Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has vowed to work for the return of government subsidy for farmers numbering some 33,000 in Pampanga.
Cayetano stressed that the subsidy for farmers, previously given by the Department of Agriculture (DA), should return to help them cope up with the rising cost of farm inputs and fertilizers.
“Our farmers are not earning because they have less profit. Their production is very much affected by the rising cost and they must be assisted by the government,” said Cayetano in a press conference at the residence of known talent choreographer, Andy Alviz, here.
“Agriculture should be at the forefront of economic growth, not lagging behind,” added Cayetano in asking for additional government support for the agriculture sector.
Cayetano turned over a hand tractor to the members of the Sta. Monica Farmers Association on Thursday.
“This is just symbolic. My way of expressing sincere desire to help the farmers in our country,” said Cayetano.
He said his visit to the farmers of Sta. Rita was part of his legislative and on-going commitment of consulting various sectors regarding issues related to “PTK,” or “Presyo (Prices), Trabaho (Employment), and Kita (Income)”.
Cayetano said that his advocacy is focused on PTK and one of the beneficiaries will be the farmers.
“We sincerely hope that this contribution to the farmers will greatly enhance their efficiency and, in the long run, allow them to be more productive and earn more,” said Cayetano.
He said the government should continue helping farmers through the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).
Cayetano expressed disappointment over the expose that alleged fake farmers’ foundations and groups had been used to illegally transfer some P10 billion.
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is leading the probe and some senators had dragged in the controversy.
“Why remove the subsidy to farmers when the problem is not the support but the alleged illegal act. We must support the investigation and not remove the support through the PDAF and other means,” said Cayetano.
