Probe harvest of corals, other marine resources’

April 20, 2011

ENVIRONMENTALISTS lauded the efforts of law enforcement units that resulted in the seizure of corals and other marine products.
“It’s good that Cebu has started a serious campaign against the extraction of coral products for the marine aquarium and curio trade,” said the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation (CCEF) in a statement sent to Sun.Star Cebu.

We can only hope these conservation efforts would be sustained to achieve a long-term impact,” the group added.

The CCEF, a non-stock and non-profit organization that advocates for marine conservation, conducts regular reef monitoring activities in Batangas, Tubbataha Reef and several areas in Central Visayas.
In a separate interview, lawyer Gloria Estenzo-Ramos encouraged local government units to investigate illegal harvesting of marine resources.
“It is encouraging to know that enforcement agents are more visible now,” she said.
“But the LGUs should do more and investigate why there seems to be a rampant violation of our laws. The barangay officials should be required to explain,” she added.
The Lapu-Lapu City Police confiscated last Monday P1 million worth of corals and shells found in a chicken coop in Barangay Punta Engaño.

Ramos also pointed out that the coral reefs in the region are already degraded due to illegal fishing activities, as well as unchecked marine resource extraction.
She cited marine scientist Kent Carpenter, who said that the Philippines—and the Visayas, in particular—is the center of marine biodiversity worldwide.
