Premeaux best vineyards are bottled as Nuits-Saint-Georges wines

About Wines from Nuits-St.-Georges of Burgundy, France
The Cote de Nuits (the northern half of the Cote d’Or) takes its name from its largest village, Nuits-Saint-Georges. Associated with Nuits-Saint-Georges is the smaller hamlet to its south, Premeaux, whose best vineyards are bottled as Nuits-Saint-Georges, A.C. and Nuits-Saint-Georges, 1er Cru. As one would expect, the main village of the Cote de Nuits is rather large for Burgundy, and its vineyards cover a total of 264 hectares, as well as an additional 54 additional hectares in Premeaux. In general, the wine of Nuits-Saint-Georges is thought of as being the very masculine wine, equivalent to Gevrey-Chambertin in power, but perhaps less refined. The wines have noticeable tannin in their youth and combine wild black and red fruits. However, within this paradigm, there are variations, and it is reasonable to group the vineyards of Nuits-Saint-Georges into three separate entities. The first sector begins at the border of Vosne-Romanee with the Premier Crus, Les Damodes and Boudots and continues south until one reaches the village proper. In true Burgundian fashion, the wines here synthesize their Nuits-Saint-Georges pedigree with hints of Vosne. The tannins are more gentle, the aromatics more complex and the fruit is fuller. Traversing the streets of the Nuits-Saint-Georges and continuing in a southerly direction, we come to the appellation’s second, central part. These vineyards are the heart of the appellation and the historic foundation of its reputation. In a manner similar to many other villages of Burgundy, Nuits affixed the name of its most celebrated vineyard, les Saint-Georges, which is located in the vicinity. These wines are prototypical Nuits-Saint-Georges: sauvage and with undeniable prowess. The appellation ends to the south in Premeaux. Vineyards such as Domaine de l’Arlot’s Clos de l’Arlot and Clos des Forets-Saint-Georges and the Cote de Nuits’ southernmost premier cru, Clos de la Marechale define the area. These wines are more stylish, the fruit is brighter and the wines are less angular than more typical Nuits Saint Georges.
