‘Pedring’ death toll up to 18

Wednesday, September 28, 2011
MANILA (Updated 7:30 a.m.) — The number of fatalities from Typhoon “Pedring” (international codename: Nesat) rose to 18, the national disaster council said Wednesday.
In its 6 a.m. Wednesday report, the National Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) said most death have occurred in Central Luzon.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services (Pagasa) said the typhoon continues to move west northwest and still affecting western Luzon.
At 5 a.m. Wednesday, the weather disturbance was 300 kilometers northwest of Baguio City with maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 150 kph.
Storm signal number 2 remains in La Union, Pangasinan, and Zambales.
Storm signal number 1 is still up in Bataan, Pampanga, Benguet, Tarlac, Ilocos Sur, Abra, and Ilocos Norte.
The typhoon is expected to leave the Philippines late Wednesday afternoon and head into the West Philippine Sea toward southern China.
Residents in low lying and mountainous areas under public storm warning signals are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides. Likewise, those living in coastal areas are alerted against big waves or storm surges generated by this tropical cyclone.
Typhoon Pedring will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon and will bring scattered to widespread rains over southern Luzon and western Visayas.
Malacañang on Wednesday announced the resumption of classes in schools and work in government offices following the devastation of Typhoon Pedring Tuesday.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said exempted in the resumption are affected areas where a suspension of classes and/or work has already been declared by the local government and/or the Department of Education (DepEd).
Valte said that the recommendation to resume classes and government work came from the country’s weather bureau.
In areas that are still flooded and where there are continuing power outages, the discretion for suspension is left to the local government units and school officials concerned, the Palace official said.
Classes in pre-school are automatically suspended for areas under signal number one while classes up to high school are suspended for areas under signal number two.
Classes in some private and public preschool to high school are suspended in Malabon, Marikina, Navotas and Valenzuela. Some elementary schools in the cities of Manila, Quezon and Muntinlupa have canceled classes as classrooms are being used as evacuation centers.
Class suspensions were also announced in Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and Calabarzon areas.
Pedring forced the closure of all government agencies on Tuesday except those involved in disaster mitigation efforts.
Office of the Civil Defense Director Benito Ramos said the number of casualties is likely to increase as landslides were reported in the Cordillera Administrative Region, one of the worst-hit areas in Luzon.
The NDRRMC said 10,932 families or 52,993 persons were affected by the typhoon.
It also said total cost of damages was at P100,264,840.63 as of this posting.
Pagasa officials said they will continue to monitor Pedring’s movement as it continues to move away from the country. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
