Pampanga intensifies campaign to have zero maternal deaths
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – The intensified campaign of the Pampanga government to eliminate maternal deaths is expected to lower further the average number of pregnancy-related ailments in the province, officials said.
Gov. Lilia Pineda led the “Buntis check-up” program at district hospitals in Pampanga, allowing pregnant women to have free pre-natal checkups and to have supply of the necessary vitamins, including ferrous sulfate. The on-going province-wide project was started late last year and more than 2,000 women were already served.
Pineda, who allotted at least P600 million for the improvement of the 10 district hospitals and one provincial hospital, said “the low number of the average maternal deaths in Pampanga only inspired me to have a zero case.”
Department of Health (DOH) Regional Director Dr. Leonita Gorgolon disclosed that there are “between 22 to 32” maternal deaths per 100,000 women in Pampanga.
The average, she added, is low compared to the vision of the government to have 52 maternal deaths per 100,000 by the year 2016. She was interviewed when she recently turned over P8.5 million worth of Rural Health Units (RHU) and birthing stations in Apalit town.
Elizabeth Baybayan, provincial social welfare and development officer, said Family Access Cards will be issued to patients who are not PhilHealth members. She added that they will given discount rates on availing medical services in Pampanga-run hospitals.
