Mayor: San Fernando open to waste woes solutions

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Mayor Oscar Rodriguez on Tuesday expressed willingness for the City government of San Fernando to help in solving the province’s crisis on garbage and solid waste management.
Rodriguez said this after the City Government came under fire from “environmentalists,” who said he had denied all along the existence of an open dumpsite in Barangay Lara, this city.
The 16-hectare ballyhooed site is home to the rising Biosphere project, which has been stalled until last week but is fast moving on after the purchase of proponent Blue Steel Corporation of the last, much needed component — a drier — needed to process a projected 600 metric tons of waste per day to gas and ultimately green energy.
During the Provincial Board Session held at Governor Lilia Pineda’s home in Lubao on Monday, where she celebrated her birthday, she asked the august body led by Vice Governor Joseller “Yeng” Guiao if Rodriguez would agree to making the alleged dumpsite a materials recovery facility (MRF) for the province.
At first, the governor was dismayed of the issue after seeing photographs of dumpsites in the province. She agreed to move on with a proposed garbage summit to resolve the province’s woes on waste.
“Ang problema yata ng San Fernando eh, wala silang malaking area for an MRF (Material Recovery Facility). Pero, papayag kaya si Mayor Oca na iyung Lara ang gawin nating provincial MRF?” she asked members of the PB, adding “E wari manugse tamu mu naman karin?” (Aren’t we throwing garbage there, too?)
Guiao however quipped: “Eya mabisa siguro ita [Rodriguez] (He may not approve of it).
Willing to accommodate request
But Rodriguez expressed his willingness to work with Capitol simply to resolve the garbage plague.
“Definitely, open kami with the idea the moment Biosphere operates. We will see the capacity if it will allow the entry of other local government units. We are more than willing to accommodate them,” the mayor said.
Rodriguez said that the possibility will depend on the actual capacity of Biosphere to churn out garbage into gas then to electric power.
“Sixteen hectares iyon at kung kulang ang requirements nila mula sa San Fernando, then okay kami to accommodate other towns. What I know is that Biosphere could take in hundreds of metric tons per day. Until it operates, we could not determine the exact requirement but definitely, kulang iyun kung sa San Fernando lang. Many more municipalities could be accommodated,” he said.
He added that the governor could put up facilities in other areas near the city, duplicating dumpsites like in Lubao.(Jovi T. De Leon)
