Mabalacat execs to attend Congress’ cityhood hearing

MABALACAT — Officials in this town led by Mayor Marino Morales will attend Tuesday a committee hearing slated by the House of Representatives committee on local government.
The said committee, chaired by Negros Oriental Congressman George Arnaiz, invited officials of the Land Management Bureau (LMB), National Statistics Office (NSO), and Bureau of Local Government Finance (BLGF).
But the town officials decided to attend the hearing to support to this first-class town’s cityhood, said Municipal Administrator Rosano Paquia.
Paquia said the committee hearing is a standard and ministerial procedure to determine the qualification of the town to cityhood.
He said the town has met the requirements to be a component city, including the number of population, income and others.
In 2007, the total population of the municipality has reached 203,307 and the minimum requirement of cityhood is only 150,000 residents.
In terms of income, the BLGF has certified that the town is now earning P144 million as against the required income of P100 million.
Morales said the people in general will benefit once the town becomes a city because of its economic impact.
“There will be jobs, livelihood, and other business opportunities,” Morales said.
He also assured that there will be a tax moratorium, adding the value of property will go up.
