Lawmaker files bill for Mt. Pinatubo Day

January 27, 2011

QUEZON CITY– Representative Aurelio Gonzales Jr. (3rd district) recently filed a bill declaring June 15 a special non-working holiday for Pampanga to celebrate the proverbial Kapampangan spirit and the lessons learned from the Mt. Pinatubo disaster.
House Bill 3948, an act declaring June 15 of every year as a special holiday in the province of Pampanga and Angeles City, mandates the creation of the Mt. Pinatubo Memorial Day.
Gonzales said some of today’s youth barely recall the disaster that hit the province almost two decades ago. The Mt. Pinatubo eruption of June 15, 1991, devastated Central Luzon and caused untold suffering for many Kapampangans, and forever changed the landscape of many provinces in the area.
“Pampanga, which was one of the hardest-hit provinces, saw her towns being buried under tons of lahar, displacing many constituents and forcing them to stay in relocation centers. The province has slowly recovered from the catastrophe, is continuously rebuilding and is a living testament to the versatility of the Filipino people,” Gonzales said.
He sees the Kapampangans’ ability to rise from this tragedy as a manifestation of resilience, iron will and triumph of the human spirit.
“The lessons we have learned will help and teach us to strive harder in order to reach even greater heights,” Gonzales stressed, adding that Kapampangans should remember their past in order to prepare the current generation for the future’s challenges.
“Twenty years, hence and every year thereafter, it is but fitting that we commemorate this event, not dwell on the pain and suffering it caused, but to inspire all of us to work for the betterment of our communities. That despite the seemingly overwhelming odds, we stood united, faced the challenges and emerged as better persons,” Gonzales added.
House Bill 3948 has now passed first reading in the House of Representatives. Gonzales said the proposed Mt. Pinatubo Memorial Day will provide historians and educators here a chance to highlight the 20 years after the Mt. Pinatubo eruption through a fitting celebration. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
