CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Laus Group of Companies (LGC) on Saturday afternoon conducted its second bloodletting and donation at the headquarters of the Corporate Guarantee Insurance Corporation (CGIC) in this city.

According to Human Resources chief Chi Sangil, the second round of the bloodletting, conducted in partnership with the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC), aptly coincided with the celebration of Valentine’s Day, as the campaign was dubbed “A Gift from the Heart: Give Blood, Save a Life.”

“It was timed for Valentine’s really. It’s a part of our sustained corporate social responsibility where we want to give back and reach out to communities we serve,” said Sangil, adding that more than 70 volunteers from various affiliates of LGC have signed up for the “bloody day.”

Sheila Delos Santos, LGC Training and Development officer, told Sun.Star Pampanga that this year’s bloodletting may surpass that of last year, where some 37 450cc bags of blood were generated and turned over to the PNRC.

“We have about 70 volunteers who signed up for this year and many more are just coming over to manifest their interest of giving blood to save lives. This year, the rejection rate is lower and we may be able to surpass our input last year,” Delos Santos said.

PNRC workers said that among the reasons why a donor is not allowed to donate blood, much as he or she wants to, is high blood pressure (140/90 and below is the parameter); travel abroad or recent illness.

PNRC volunteers added that the most common blood type poured into bags on Saturday was Type O, the universal type that is majorly needed in its blood banks.

“We just want to give back to the community what we can, help others and save lives,” said CGIC’s Dong Tolentino, who took his wife along as a donor. (Jovi T. De Leon)
