Kabalens hope Aquino takes up Clark issues on SONA
STA. RITA — Kapampangans and local businessmen have a list of topics they wish to hear from President Benigno Aquino III in his fourth State of the Nation Address (Sona), especially concerns ranging from the Clark Airport, agriculture, support for small and medium enterprises and even the proposed scrapping of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or pork barrel of lawmakers.
Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PamCham) Vice Chairman Rene Romero told Sun.Star Pampanga that businessmen here are still advocating for the twin airport system that would make Clark Airport as a support airport for the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
Romero said they are hoping that Aquino would make definite pronouncements on the role of the Clark Airport, even as he added that local businessmen are also hoping for a better support system on the part of local business sector, and micro, small and medium enterprises throughout the region.
“We are also calling for the President’s support for the amendments to Republic Act 9178, or the ‘Barangay Micro Business Enterprises Act of 2002’ and the start of better incentive system for local businesses that are similar to those of foreign direct investors,” Romero said.
Romero also said businessmen here are wondering over the plans of Aquino on how he would be able to implement programs that will sustain the country’s fiscal growth and achievements in the last quarters.
“It is important that the fiscal gains are maintained so that the full benefit of these would be felt by those in the margins of society,” Romero said.
Meanwhile, ordinary Kapampangans said that they hope to hear Aquino discuss his programs for the agriculture sector and the status of his food security initiatives.
Joselito Mangiliman, a farmer, said they hope to hear more concrete programs in minimizing the cost for shipping and transporting farm produce to markets and urban centers. He added that while farm-to-market roads are in place, it is still expensive to transport farm produce which forces farmers to patronize opportunistic middlemen in the transfer of their farm produce to markets.
Mangiliman and Romero are also one in calling on Aquino to scrap the pork barrel funds to lawmakers. Romero said pork funds are mostly used by some unscrupulous politicians in advancing their political careers ‘through corruption.’
Aquino will deliver his Sona at the opening session of Congress at the Batasang Pambansa Complex.
