Informal settlers in Marimla Creek get aid
LUBAO, Pampanga — Some 59 informal settlers living along the banks of Marimla Creek in Barangay Concepcion received emergency shelter assistance worth P590,000 from the Capitol on Wednesday.
The P10,000 per family cash aid is meant for their relocation since the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is set to start the Contract Package 1 involving the improvement of the local drainage system of Marimla Creek, said Gov. Lilia Pineda.
“Instead of merely forcing you to move out of your homes, we are here to speak with you diplomatically and provide you financial assistance as you seek for residence elsewhere,” Pineda told the informal settlers in a dialogue.
About 20 of the families have already agreed to temporarily relocate in a six-hectare lot owned by the DPWH at Barangay Gumi in Lubao.
Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Beth Baybayan added that Capitol will coordinate with Mayor Mylyn Pineda-Cayabyab on the formulation of a comprehensive housing development program for the relocates, while seeking assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the National Housing Authority for the provision of permanent shelters.
The Capitol, meanwhile, vowed to provide financial assistance amounting to P10,000 to each family living in communities near the embankment of the Pampanga River.
Pineda said the initiative is intended to protect residents from untoward incidents.
Most of the family-beneficiaries will come from barangays Guemasan and Cupang in Arayat town.
This, according to the governor, is aimed at convincing affected families to look for a safer place to reside, considering that the Guemasan and Cupang dikes are always in critical condition during the rainy season. (With Herbert Mapiles)
