Gov renews commitment to solve garbage problem
Mayors told to buckle down to work and address concern
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–Governor Lilia Pineda on Wednesday vowed to give a “renewed effort and commitment” in solving the garbage problem in Pampanga.
Pineda, who is on her second term, said she had focused on “too many things such as education, health and agriculture that’s why my effort was not enough to help solve the problem on waste.”
Pineda disclosed that the provincial government will purchase a land in Porac town to be used as a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). She added that they will push waste segregation as highlighted in the Solid Waste Management Act.
“I will pressure more the mayors and the barangay captains. They must be more aggressive and dedicated,” said Pineda in the dialect.
“More importantly, the some two million Pampanga folk should cooperate by simply being responsible when disposing off their waste,” she added.
Art Punsalan, head of the Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office (PGENRO), said that under the same law on waste management, it was specified that mayors and barangay captains are mandated to be directly in charge of its implementation.
The Ecological Solid Management Act or Republic Act 9003 was signed into law in 2000.
“The governor is supposed to be just a supporting act. What is happening is that she is the one leading the campaign. Worse, the governor is not getting much cooperation from many officials,” said Punsalan.
He said Pineda had given one brand-new garbage truck to each of the 21 towns and cities of the province “as a testament to her desire to help solve the problem.”
“Not to mention the other support she is giving such as educating the people and officials on waste management and other forms of logistics,” said Punsalan.
He said the province produces between 800 to 900 metric tons of garbage per day.
Punsalan said: “If we will not segregate and throw all our waste in sanitary landfills, we will spend at least P500 million yearly just for that purpose.”
