Friends, students remember slain Kapampangan nurse
ANGELES CITY — Thirty-three-year-old Erano Santos moved to the United States early last year to fulfill his dreams and work as nurse. Less than a year later, he was found dead after he was shot by still unknown assailant — leaving his family, friends and former students here devastated and saddened with his untimely death.
For them, he was a good friend, a joy to be with and an unconventional teacher.
Chris Garcia, a long-time friend of Santos, said he was always a friend who easily made others laugh. He added that Erdy, as they fondly called him, touched so many lives during his teaching stint at Holy Angel University.
“I could never pinpoint a single moment that could highlight Erano’s kindness and bigheartedness. Erdy and I have been friends since 2006 and through the years our relationship has grown way beyond friendship. We became brothers, together with the rest of the younger members of the Holy Angel University College of Nursing faculty. Erdy is the type of person whom you’ll never talk bad about. As cliché as it may sound, he is a good person inside out. It’s as if I had a brother, a friend, a mentor, a confidant and a guidance counselor all rolled into one,” Garcia told Sun.Star Pampanga.
Erdy’s former student Jam Pineda described his former teacher as a soft-spoken man, with a ready smile for everyone.
“I was fortunate to have been a student of Sir Erdy. I admired him because of his gentle manners, his hunger for success and his ambitions too. And while I will miss him as a mentor and friend, I’m comforted by the knowledge that his accomplishments, his students and his intellect are enduring and will continue to exemplify the very best in Nursing. Though he is no longer with us we can celebrate that we were privileged to have known him and became part of our lives. We lost a great mentor, a friend. But our dear Sir Erdy is now happy to face the Lord. Prayers go with him and he will be always remembered by everyone,” Pineda said.
Nurse JoeAnne Andal Maniulit, another student of Erdy during his stint as clinical instructor at Holy Angel University, said Santos was a man who lived a remarkable life.
“Sir Erdy was one of the teachers who taught us the last and most important component of learning: He taught us Good Attitude. Just knowing that someone believes in you the way that Sir Erdy did really changes the course of one’s life. It continues to inspire you to make the right choices. It inspires you to do your very best in all circumstances, even when this person is far away, and even when this person is gone. Mr. Santos had a profound impact not only in my life, but in the lives of many of the students that he taught, and all the patients he cared for,” Maniulit said.
Santos was found dead near Stonebridge Crossing Apartments in Cordova, Tennessee last Saturday afternoon (Sunday, Philippine time) by Memphis police.
Santos sustained a gunshot wound that had caused his death. Santos was a former Clinical Instructor at Holy Angel University’s College of Nursing. The victim’s Facebook page also lists Philippine International Hospital as among his previous employers. Memphis police, in a report, said that they are searching for the vehicle taken from a murder scene in Cordova Saturday afternoon. His relatives and friends are now processing the return of his remains here.
Angeles University Foundation, Santos’ alma mater, has also expressed their condolences and has also joined the call for the speedy resolution of the case.
